SUMMARY: Researchers will fill gaps in our knowledge of the feline genome (DNA sequence).
THE PROBLEM:The analysis of complete genomes from cats has proven instrumental in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It has also been essential for developing tests that help reduce disease in the pet population. Despite great improvements in the last 15 years in this area of study, there are still areas of the cat genome (DNA sequence) that remain unknown. In particular, our understanding of how cat genes are turned “on” and “off” is lacking.
THE PROJECT: This study will address this gap in knowledge by aligning the best cat genomes with those of 240 other mammals, to identify all of the functional elements in cat genomes. This data will be a valuable resource for the feline veterinary community and builds on research done previously by the same research team and others.
POTENTIAL IMPACT: This information will aid veterinarians, researchers, and breeders in improving the health of our pets.
