Systems biology is a way to study complex disease by examining the interaction between an animal’s genes, environment and physical characteristics using powerful computer modeling. Researchers will develop a systems biology model for equine metabolic syndrome, a complex disease and major health concern in horses across breeds. EMS is often challenging to diagnose and treat. By using large data sets of genetic, health and environmental data derived from 100 horses, researchers will use systems biology analysis to redefine EMS into subgroups. This process is a critical step toward precision medicine for horses affected by EMS; subgroups can separate horses into a more targeted diagnostic and treatment categories.
