SUMMARY: Researchers will look for markers of health in dog blood samples.
THE PROBLEM: Over the last 40 years, dog lifespans have doubled. However, just like people, older pets are prone to specific health problems. These include poor heart function, kidney disease, and arthritis, all of which are often worsened by obesity. Consequently, animal healthcare is now in need of better tools to properly treat older pets.
THE PROJECT: Aging causes changes inside all the cells of the body. These DNA biomarkers can be reliably linked to one’s age and health, and they differ between individuals depending on their health. In this pilot study, the research team will search for DNA biomarkers that may play a role in aging and disease. They’ll compare healthy dogs to dogs that are obese or have an age-related disease using samples from the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. The goal is to identify new markers to explore in future studies for their potential use in early disease diagnostics, treatments, and prevention strategies.
POTENTIAL IMPACT: This work will positively impact the ability for pet owners and veterinarians to care for aging animals and improve the quality of life of our beloved companions and service animals.
