SUMMARY: Researchers will look for new biomarkers for early diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma.

THE PROBLEM: Hemangiosarcoma is a serious and deadly form of cancer that affects all dogs but golden retrievers are especially prone to this form of cancer. Early diagnosis could improve long-term prognosis and management of this terrible cancer.

THE PROJECT: The team plans to look at lipids and metabolic by-products in the blood and feces of golden retrievers enrolled in the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study that were diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. They hope to identify unique biomarkers of disease.

POTENTIAL IMPACT: If successful, the results could provide the basis for additional studies looking for the same biomarkers in other breeds of dogs with and without hemangiosarcoma. Ultimately, the findings could provide a basis for a commercial test.
