Obesity has been identified as an important risk factor for asthma in people. Some evidence suggests there also is an association between asthma and obesity in horses; however, this association has not been fully explored. To fill this knowledge gap, researchers will study the mechanisms of disease, evaluating markers of the immune system and differences in bacterial populations in asthmatic horses, with and without obesity. If confirmed that obesity is a risk factor for asthmatic disease in horses, these new findings will help improve our understanding, diagnosis and management of asthma, especially in obese asthmatic equine patients.
