SUMMARY: Researchers will evaluate nine currently available drugs for the treatment of deadly algae infections in dogs.

DESCRIPTION: Single-cell algae known as Prototheca are the only plants able to cause infections, and they're an increasingly prevalent cause of lethal infections in dogs. Prototheca infections are very hard to treat and are nearly 100% fatal despite therapy. After screening 1,200 commercially available drugs, researchers identified nine promising drugs with unexpected anti-Prototheca activity. In this study, the team will focus on identifying which of these candidates are best suited for treating dogs sickened by Prototheca. Findings will inform future studies in dog patients suffering from these rare, but frequently fatal, infections.
