The Australian 2019-20 bushfire season killed more than one billion wild animals and injured countless others required veterinary attention. Limited information exists about how best to manage these animals to maximize their chances of successful release back to the wild. Researchers will review records and analyze samples from wildlife affected in 2019-2020 to identify factors that influence prognosis and welfare. These findings will guide decision-making during triage and intensive veterinary care of fire-affected koalas and kangaroos.
