Small strongyles are a common intestinal parasite of horses. However, the indiscriminate use of broad spectrum deworming drugs for the past 40 years has led to some parasite species becoming drug resistant. To address this problem, researchers will identify which small strongyles are first to reappear in horses after treatment, thus more likely to become drug resistant. Understanding drug sensitivity and specific resistance mechanisms will help researchers develop more effective and targeted deworming strategies.
