According to a recent epidemiological study, about 1 in 300 cats seen in veterinary teaching hospitals developed feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a uniformly fatal disease and a leading cause of death in young cats. Despite the impact of this viral disease on cat health, no effective vaccine or treatment is currently available. Researchers will investigate if a novel antiviral drug can cure or greatly extend the lifespan and quality of life of client-owned cats with naturally occurring FIP. Potential drug resistance also will be studied.
