SUMMARY: Researchers will study whether the loss of a close human or animal companion affects cognitive decline.
THE PROBLEM:Dogs play many roles throughout human society today, from detection dogs to service animals, to cherished companions. For many people, dogs are even considered members of the family with whom they form strong bonds. These relationships between humans and dogs can have major impacts on quality of life for both people and the animals themselves. Researchers have been exploring how these dog-human relationships and the loss of beloved companions affect people. But what about the dogs? There is a lot we still don’t know about how they experience these bonds and potential losses.
THE PROJECT: In this project, the research team will investigate if and when such a bond is broken, the effect on cognition. Using data from the Dog Aging Project, the team will analyze this information to look at whether the loss of a companion (human, dog, or another animal) affects dogs’ mental health as they age, and how dog owners and their veterinary care team can be more aware if and when these changes occur.
POTENTIAL IMPACT: The team hopes their results will improve understanding of how dogs experience loss and grief to improve their care and well-being.
