Allergic asthma, one of the most common respiratory disorders in cats, affects up to 5 percent of pet cats. There is no cure for asthma, and cats require lifelong treatment. Definitive diagnosis of asthma in cats currently requires invasive testing; risk and expense lead to delayed diagnosis and thus delayed treatment. These delays can lead to permanent changes in the lungs that are difficult to treat. Researchers are testing a novel technique that would use biomarkers in exhaled breath samples of cats to diagnose asthma. This noninvasive approach may aid in early diagnosis and may also provide options for monitoring efficacy of treatment.
