The Australian government recently listed koalas on the threatened species list. Captive management of koalas requires keeping them free of pathogens; however, disease is a problem for both captive and wild animals. Researchers will determine whether the koala retrovirus (KoRV) and newly discovered KoRV variants play a direct role in the development of common koala cancers, such as lymphoma. Results from this study will be used to implement strategies to limit exposure and transmission to virus-free animals both in captive and wild populations, and to develop effective antiretroviral therapies or vaccines.
