Maverick
Forever in our hearts
Maverick was a cross between Siamese and Abyssinian, and showed the best traits of both breeds. He was curious, playful, affectionate, and loved to go outside for walks on a harness. He was also the soul of the house, always wanting to be where anything was happening and wanting to know what you were doing. He had no respect for the fact that you were trying to work on the computer and that he was interfering by being on the desk. He was a great comfort to my mother as she dealt with aging and Lou Gehrig's disease.
In mid-December 2014, Maverick was noticeably ill and a blood test revealed he'd been dealing with kidney failure for some time. We tried a couple of rounds of IV and subcutaneous fluids, which helped him have a couple more good days, but by the day after Christmas, it was clear it was time to say goodbye. He seemed to understand what was going on as the vet prepared the injections, and he lay down peacefully. He is sorely missed, and I hope some progress can be made in the diagnosis and treatment of feline kidney failure.
