Gabby

Gabby was one of those “once in a lifetime” pets that everyone remembers no matter how many years pass from your final goodbye.  Make no mistake, Gabby led a medically difficult life from beginning to end.  But you would never know it because of her happy spirit.  There may never be another cat to live that was as happy and content as Gabby. 

Gabby was a princess and knew it.  She was a beautiful cat that captured everyone’s attention when they met her.  Everyone would make a fuss over her and she would stand tall and proud as people approached her and petted her, making sure to give a head butt to their hands.

Gabby made sure her humans were always taken care of and monitored.  She would not go to bed until all humans were in the bed.  After that, she would come in and sleep at the foot of the bed to protect them during the night.  She may fall asleep near you if you were in the kitchen late at night, but she was always there until you went to bed.  And let’s not forget about the nightly presents!  Almost every night, Gabby brought her humans a present and made sure to announce the progress of her journey until she reached the bedroom.  The pretzel was the prized possession that was frequently and proudly delivered as a present to her humans.

When Gabby met her little sister, Savannah, she was a bit unsure at first with maybe a hiss or two. But very shortly after, a toy that was originally on her side of the pet gate appeared under the gate as a gift to this new little sister.  That was so exemplary of Gabby’s welcoming spirit.  When the new human came along, she adopted him into the family and treated him like one of her own instead of a spare human.

Gabby made sure that if you were working from home that you were not alone and made no mistakes with your work.  She was always there to supervise!

During one visit to the vet, Gabby needed x-rays.  The vet tech laid her on the table in the correct position and left to take the x-rays. Gabby never moved as if she knew what she was supposed to do and that this was needed.  Trusting is honestly an understatement when trying to describe her.

Gabby was on a special diet and her humans bought her a feeder that opened when it read her microchip or by pressing a button on the back to put more food into the feeder.  A routine came about in which Gabby would speak on command and her humans would go get some food.  Then to help her humans a bit, she would wait for the “open” command, stick her head inside the feeder to open the lid, and then back away so the humans could put her food into the bowl.  Fortunately her humans have several videos of this as people never believed them when describing this feat.

One night while the humans were on their way home, they pulled up at the same time to the front of the house as the local fire department was assembling firemen on the front lawn.  Her humans immediately went into rescue mode while the firemen looked around the house for a fire.  Once the front door was open, everyone found Gabby sitting perfectly still in the foyer while they went flying by looking inside for flames.  Thankfully a smoke detector low battery caused the false alarm and there was no trouble.  But the entire time people were running around and yelling, Gabby sat quietly in her same position watching the commotion as if to say “It is a false alarm. Calm down! I have it under control.”

Gabby Girl is still a part of our memories and stories and will never be forgotten.  She is a lesson in being content in the moment and not worrying about all the noise of the world when you are with those you love and cherish.  Never has a pet captured and demonstrated such grace and love as Gabby did.
