January 27, 2023 – Since 2007, the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America (BMDCA) has donated to Morris Animal Foundation in support of research projects focused on health issues affecting the breed, such as cancer and orthopedic disease. Their funding – over $200,000 to date – has not only improved the lives of Bernese mountain dogs, but contributed to the well-being of other breeds, too.

The club recently committed to funding a study looking at a new cancer drug, trametinib, in the treatment of histiocytic sarcoma. Bernese mountain dogs have a high incidence of histiocytic sarcoma, a deadly and aggressive cancer that is almost 100% fatal. There are few treatment options available, leaving bereft families of affected dogs.

“Our club has a passionate, caring membership that donates thousands of dollars every year to help researchers do what they can to help our precious dogs,” said Valerie Horney, BMDCA Director. “We’re excited to partner with the Foundation on the trametinib project. This cancer is heartbreaking for owners, and we hope this new trial can change the prognosis.”

We’re grateful for the support the BMDCA has given the Foundation for over 15 years, and look forward to a continuing partnership that will improve the health and well-being of this special breed and dogs everywhere.
