When Tag, a beloved golden retriever, lost his life to cancer, his devastated owner decided to channel her grief into action. Determined to help change health outcomes for all dogs, she is matching all gifts to the Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000, now through National Dog Day on August 26.

Each year, more than 6 million dogs are diagnosed with cancer; and cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs over the age of 1. While cancer care has advanced in the last three decades, cancer still takes the lives of too many dogs too early, and veterinarians and dog owners are too often faced with difficult choices. Morris Animal Foundation and dog lovers everywhere who support the Foundation’s work are working to change that; in fact, that was the impetus to create the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, now in its fifth year.

The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is a one-of-a-kind study that will help scientists better understand the environmental, genetic and nutritional risk factors for development of cancer and other major diseases in dogs. The study follows a cohort of 3,044 golden retrievers throughout their lives, gathering millions of data points to determine risk factors and further directions for impactful cancer research. Understanding the incredible potential of the study, Tag’s owner hopes her support will inspire others to give as well.
