Veterinary studies indicate an association between obesity and shorter life span in dogs, as well as links to certain diseases, such as diabetes. Researchers will compare blood and urine data of overweight and normal weight dogs from samples obtained when the dogs were less than 2 years old and enrolled in the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. The team will look for early indicators of metabolic abnormalities in overweight dogs to learn if these abnormalities are linked to increased risk of disease as the dogs age. A clearer understanding of the potential implications of juvenile obesity may help decrease future risk of disease in adult dogs simply by maintaining optimal body condition in puppies. This study also is providing research experience for an internal medicine resident in a private specialty practice.
