Genetic evaluation of stallion reproduction is sparse largely because many genes contributing to stallion fertility are not present in the current genome assembly which is based on a female horse. Researchers will identify aberrations in the horse’s Y chromosome and evaluate their effect on stallion fertility. Findings will inform breeding decisions and the development of novel interventions to prevent genetic defect transmissions, not only in domestic horses but also in wild related species, including endangered Grevy’s zebras and Przewalski’s horses.
