Health benefits of feeding pets raw meat-based diets are not well documented in veterinary literature. However, some studies have documented significant adverse effects of raw diets, including gastrointestinal infections and environmental shedding of bacteria and parasites that also may impact owners. Researchers will evaluate routine laboratory results in healthy golden retrievers fed either a homemade or commercially prepared diet composed of raw meat. The team will compare laboratory results to healthy golden retrievers fed commercial diets. Findings will help inform future nutritional studies as well as highlight potential pros and/or cons of raw meat-based diets for pets. This study also is providing research experience for an internal medicine resident in a private specialty practice.
