Measuring Hormones that Affect Recovery in Stranded Sea Turtles
This project will measurethe levels of stress hormone (cortisol) and metabolic hormone (T4) inendangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles that experience cold stunning, a hypothermic-like condition that causes stranding. Pilot study data suggest that levels of these hormones are related to an animal’s ability to recover from cold stunning,so accurate measurementof these hormones will improve the ability to assess stress, treat associated symptoms and increase rates of recovery.
