Morris Animal Foundation's current studies will give animals longer, healthier lives.

Each year Morris Animal Foundation funds more than 200 health studies to improve the health of dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas and numerous wildlife species. Our support also trains the next generation of veterinary scientists to meet future animal health needs.

Search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

D08EQ-006: Does Combined Treatment with Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Cure Anhidrosis? A Controlled Study

principal investigator: Dr. Robert J. MacKay, University of Florida

sponsorship not needed

The ability to sweat is critically important for horses because it allows them to dissipate the heat generated during exercise in hot climates. Unfortunately, failure to sweat sufficiently, a condition called anhidrosis, is a serious problem for horses living in hot, humid climates. No reliable treatment has been discovered, but there is some evidence that acupuncture and herbal medicine approaches have been effective. Researchers will test this theory in north-central Florida. If they are able to confirm anecdotal reports of the benefits of these therapies, the researchers will be able to develop the first treatment for this debilitating and common problem in horses.
