1. Assessing Stem Cell Therapies’ Ability to Repair Neurological Function in Horses

Description: Diseases affecting the brain and spinal cord frequently cause illness and death in horses. Recent work in other species, including humans, suggests that stem cell therapy can alleviate neuronal injury, improve function and offer hope for treating neurological disorders. The fellow will investigate which stem cell type is ideal for treating brain and spinal cord disease, how to best administer stem cells and what the potential is for using stem cell therapy in horses with brain and spinal cord diseases. The long-term goal is to improve the prognosis for horses and other species with neurological disease.
