Identifying Treatment and Prevention for Soft-Tissue Tumors
D08FE-001, North Carolina State University, Marlene L. Hauck, DVM, PhD
Samples Requested: Feline sarcomas (vaccine/injection-site associated [ISA] and non-ISA sarcomas) and vaccine reactions
Study Outline: Injection-site sarcomas, which are devastating tumors in cats, occur at the site of a previous injection or vaccination. Vaccines were first suspected as an underlying cause of these sarcomas in the early 1990s, but other types of injections also appear to cause the tumors. These tumors occur in the soft tissues. The laboratory of Dr. Marlene Hauck is evaluating the genetic changes that are seen in these tumors, along with genetic changes seen in spontaneously arising sarcomas and injection-site reactions. The goal is to identify potential targets for treatment and prevention to improve the outcome for cats with sarcomas.
Sample Submission: Researchers are interested in receiving biopsy samples of cats with ISA or non-ISA sarcomas. It is recommended that the referring or primary veterinarian submit the sample. The researchers welcome any questions referring veterinarians or owners may have.
Sample Collection and Shipping: For each sample submission, the following is required:
- Representative non-necrotic pieces of the tumor (preferably at least 1 cm3 or equivalent) collected as aseptically as possible
in each of the following:
1. RNA stabilization solution (which researchers will provide)
It is very important that samples are placed in this solution immediately after harvest.
2. Formalin
- Basic patient information, clinical history and associated pathology reports relating to this tumor
Please contact the Hauck Lab at North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine in advance of sample collection, so that we may provide detailed collection instructions and arrange shipment of RNA stabilization solution and tumor samples.
