In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund nearly 200 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as more than 40 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

D07ZO-644: Babesia spp. in Olive Baboons

principal investigator: Christine Simecka, Veterinary Student Scholar, Oklahoma State University

sponsorship not needed

Year: 1 of 1. $5,000

Babesia spp. are protozoan parasites that infect the red blood cells of many wild and domestic mammals. Recently, Babesia microti was reported in a baboon colony at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. While infection of Babesia spp. is normally well tolerated, it can cause disease in baboons if they also are immuncompromised, co-infected with other disease-causing agents, housed in stressful environments, or malnourished. This study will determine the prevalence of infection of Babesia spp. within the baboon colony and provide critical information for developing control strategies and improving animal health. In addition, the student will provide preliminary genetic data for comparing species of Babesia that infect other animals.
