current studies

In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund about 120 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as 30 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

D07ZO-640: “Development of a Multiplex PCR for Detection & Differentiation of Malignant Catarrhal Fever Viruses”

principal investigator: Lisa Otto, Veterinary Student Scholar, Washington State University
needs sponsorship

year: 1 of 1: $5,000.00

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), an often fatal disease, is caused by a group of herpesviruses. MCF has increasingly been recognized as a cause of death in several animal species, including farmed bison and deer, and also as a danger to certain threatened species held in zoos and wildlife stocks. Currently, there is no test capable of differentiating which MCF virus is involved in a disease outbreak, making it difficult to detect and properly diagnose the virus. This project will develop a type of test called a multiplex PCR that is capable of simultaneously detecting and differentiating between six MCF viruses known to cause clinical disease. This test will improve veterinary diagnostics, saving valuable time, resources and labor.
