In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund nearly 200 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as more than 40 veterinary student projects.
We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

Bartonella, are a group of bacteria that negatively impact the health of people, pets, livestock and wildlife. The bacteria sometimes cause an acute reaction, but in some cases their effects are more subtle and easily missed. This project will use blood tests to determine if black-backed jackals, spotted hyenas, and striped hyenas from the Laikipia Plateau in Kenya have been exposed to several Bartonella species. These animals likely serve as carriers for several pathogens, and thus could transmit disease between domestic dogs and endangered wildlife, such as African wild dogs. Determining whether the jackals and hyenas serve as hosts for Bartonella species will be the first step in exploring the role of these carnivores in the ecology of Bartonella and in understanding the potential for the bacteria to negatively affect carnivores.
