In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund nearly 200 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as more than 40 veterinary student projects.
We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

D07ZO-401: Do Immune Function Alterations Explain Asian Elephant Susceptibility to Mycobacterium spp?

Tuberculosis is an important health concern among Asian and African elephants worldwide. Most cases are due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, which is also the cause of human tuberculosis. Approximately one-third of all Asian elephants are captive or domesticated in Southeast Asia, a region with the second-highest human tuberculosis prevalence in the world. In people, the disease occurs when the immune system doesn't respond adequately to fight the bacteria. The reasons underlying elephant susceptibility to tuberculosis are unknown. Utilizing molecular techniques, this study aims to understand elephant immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The ultimate goal is to improve disease management for captive and free-ranging populations. This grant will provide hands-on training for a postdoctoral student.
