D07FE-601: Effect of Exogenous Melatonin on Prevention of Breeding Season in the Domestic Cat

principal investigator: Ana Cristina Carranza Martin, Veterinary Student Scholar, Catholic University of Córdoba, Argentina

needs sponsorship

Year: 1 of 1. $2,400

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates reproduction in cats. In this study, the student will randomly treat 16 female cats with either melatonin or a placebo and will then evaluate the long-term release of melatonin. She will monitor the cats to determine whether increased melatonin can prevent the feline estrus cycle. This pilot trial hopes to identify an efficient, safe and practical drug protocol that could be used to control overpopulation during the breeding season.
