current studies

In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund about 120 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as 30 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

Cytauxzoonosis is a highly fatal, tick-borne disease that is devastating to domestic cats. Severe illness occurs rapidly and nearly all cats die within one week of showing clinical signs. Although historically fatal, recent reports indicate that some cats have survived Cytauxzoon felis infection, suggesting the possibility that a less lethal parasite strain exists. These cats may still harbor the parasite, though, and may have the ability to spread it to other cats through tick bites. This study will assess genetic variability in the parasite to determine the role of different C. felis strains in disease transmission and virulence in cats. The results of this study will greatly enhance current understanding of cytauxzoonosis and the ability to prevent this highly fatal infectious disease. This grant is a companion to D07FE-151 and will provide hands-on training for a postdoctoral student.
