current studies

In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund about 120 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as 30 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

D07FE-007: “Immunoreactive Antigens of Mycoplasma heamofelis and Development of an Immunoassay”

principal investigator: Dr. Joanne B. Messick, Purdue University
needs sponsorship

year: 1 of 2: $45,274.00

Mycoplasma haemofelis is an infectious pathogen that causes acute and chronic diseases in cats. Acute infection can lead to severe and sometimes fatal hemolytic anemia. The parasite is also notorious for its ability to evade the animal's immune system and successfully establish chronic infection. Currently, there is no serologic (antibody-based) test for this infection. The researchers hypothesize that detection of antibodies to M. haemofelis could provide a sensitive approach to identifying cats that are infected. This study will use molecular techniques to provide a source of antigen that can be used in an antibody-based (immunoassay) test. This test may lead to the implementation of new control strategies of this widespread pathogen, and monies generated from a patent on this test could be used to fund additional feline health research.
