D07EQ-627: Characterizing the Effects of Vitamin C on Equine Pyridinium Crosslinking
principal investigator: Susie Baker, Veterinary Student Scholar, Mississippi State University

Year: 1 of 1. $5,000
Collagen plays an important role in the strength of bone, cartilage and connective tissue. Vitamin C is critical to proper collagen formation in several species, but its exact significance in horses is undetermined. This research project will investigate the effect of Vitamin C on the formation of collagen in the horse. In particular the student will analyze the chemical bonds that are responsible for the tensile strength of collagen in body tissue. This research could lead to dietary modifications for horses which will enhance the strength of bodily tissues including bones, tendons, and ligaments.
