D07EQ-305: Changes in Insulin Sensitivity with Body Composition in the Horse
principal investigator: Dr. Shannon E. Pratt, North Carolina State University
needs sponsorship
Year: 2 of 2. $34,646
Recently, decreased insulin sensitivity and obesity in horses have been linked to inflammatory conditions such as laminitis, but the relationship is not fully understood. This study will investigate how changes in body composition, achieved through modified caloric intake, affect insulin sensitivity and insulin pathways within the muscles and tissues of horses. Determining how nutritional management can affect body composition and influence insulin sensitivity and inflammation will offer insight for horse owners on appropriate feeding practices that will improve equine health.
