current studies

In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund about 120 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as 30 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

D07CA-602: “Use of a GnRH Antagonist on Estrous Cycle Interruption”

principal investigator: Elisa Juarez, Veterianry Student Scholar, National University of La Plata, Argentina
needs sponsorship

year: 1 of 1: $2,400.00

Dog overpopulation is problem in many South American countries, but estrous bitches currently are excluded from the government spaying programs. This project will analyze the possibility of controlling pregnancies through the use of GnRH antagonists, which are safe compounds that block the hormones necessary to maintain estrous cycles. Sixteen estrous female dogs will be randomly treated either with a GnRH antagonist or a placebo, followed up and their success rates (estrous cycle interruption) compared. This trial would identify an efficient, safe and practical protocol to rapidly interrupt cycling in female dogs and help control overpopulation.
