D07CA-402: Development of a DIVA Test Strategy for Canine Influenza

Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs that can progress to life-threatening pneumonia and death in some animals. Dogs in shelter facilities, boarding/training facilities, day care centers, veterinary clinics, pet stores and grooming parlors are at highest risk for exposure. Due to the increasing frequency of canine influenza outbreaks that impact the health and welfare of dogs, a vaccine is urgently needed to provide protection from infection. However, vaccination will interfere with the current serology test used to confirm the diagnosis of infected dogs. The objective of this study is to develop a diagnostic test strategy that can differentiate infected dogs from those that are vaccinated, thus ensuring that infected dogs are properly managed. This grant is a companion to D07CA-151 and will provide hands-on training for a postdoctoral student.
