In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund nearly 200 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as more than 40 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common cause of illness and death in dogs. Current noninvasive tests for detecting this disease are relatively insensitive - often 65 to 75 percent of renal function must be lost before noninvasive tests can reliably detect disease. This means that most chronic kidney disease is diagnosed in the advanced stages, when it is severe and irreversible. Detection at an earlier stage would allow for intervention therapy that would slow the disease's progression and increase longevity of sick animals. This study will identify urine markers of kidney disease that may help veterinarians detect CKD in its early stages and gauge the disease's progression. This would permit improved treatment for dogs with CKD, leading to reduced clinical illness and longer lifespan.
