current studies

In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund about 120 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as 30 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

A number of recent disaster events have elevated the status of working dogs and highlighted the need to keep these dogs healthy. Studies on dogs who were deployed to recent disaster areas found that 68 percent of them had a health-related problem. Heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration and heat exhaustion, are leading causes of morbidity and mortality among these dogs, yet there are no evidence-based guidelines on preventing these injuries. This study will look at how different environmental conditions, such as heat and humidity, affect working dogs. Researchers will also asses the use of protective and cooling vests. The information can be used in future disaster preparedness plans to help better define work and rest schedules for working dogs based on environmental conditions and the work involved. This will keep these dogs healthier and lower their risk of heat-related illness or death.
