In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund about 120 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as 30 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a common, severe blood disorder affecting all breeds of dogs. It occurs when the dog’s own body begins to destroy its blood cells. A frequent and often fatal complication of IMHA is blood clot formation, known as thrombosis. To help prevent these episodes, dogs are often treated with anti-thrombotic drugs. Unfortunately, because little is known about the underlying cause of these clots, treatment often isn’t effective long term. This project aims to define the cause of abnormal clotting in these dogs, with the ultimate goal of developing a more effective treatment strategy. The ability to prevent these clots would significantly improve the survival rate of these dogs.
