As reptiles become more popular as pets, they need better veterinary care and pain management. These animals can suffer from numerous painful conditions, including trauma from bite wounds, burns, falls and generalized illness. Unfortunately, pain is difficult to measure in reptiles because they show minimal pain response. As a result, very little is known about reptile physiology, how they feel pain or the effectiveness of currently used pain-relieving drugs. In previous studies, the researchers developed a valid test for monitoring pain in reptiles. In this study, they will use this test to evaluate the effectiveness of various pain-relieving medications in bearded dragons. This study will help veterinarians to determine the best drugs and dosages for alleviating pain in reptiles.
