In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund about 120 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as 30 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

D05EQ-307: “Are Foal Dendritic Cells Effective Promotors of a T Helper 1 Response?”

principal investigator: Brett A. Sponseller, DVM, Ph.D., Iowa State University

year: 2 of 2: $54,000.00

Bacterial pneumonia is the primary cause of death among foals under six months of age. Currently, it is unclear why foals are more susceptible than adult horses to the pathogens that cause respiratory disease. Investigators hypothesize that differences in cell-mediated immune responses account for this disparity. This study will focus on the dendritic cell, which regulates immune response. Investigators will compare how this cell functions in both young and mature horses to learn more about why foals are predisposed to developing pneumonia at a young age. This grant will fund a young investigator’s efforts to establish a career in cell biology and neonatal immunology.
