Longtime Morris Animal Foundation trustee and actress Betty White is doing more than speaking out for the animals she loves. She is funding research to help improve their lives. The actress agreed to match up to $25,000 to fund research into leptospirosis, a potentially fatal and contagious disease that affects a growing number of dogs. Sir Elton John and his Foundation recently matched Betty’s donation.

Betty along with Paul Raybould, executive vice president of MAF, attended the 18th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Award Party at Pacific Design Center on March 7, 2010, in West Hollywood, California.

Through the Canine Cancer Campaign, Morris Animal Foundation is creating a healthier tomorrow for dogs. Research funded through the campaign will help develop prevention strategies, test new treatments, establish tools for cancer researchers and train new scientists specializing in cancer research. Dr. Kirk Weicht Wins Third Annual Thank Your Vet for a Healthy Pet Contest®, Sponsored by Morris Animal Foundation, Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. and BowTie Inc.

According to Gina DeGennaro of Arlington, Texas, Dr. Kirk Weicht of Brown Trail Animal Hospital is truly the heartbeat of his clinic because he goes above and beyond for his clients and his community. Thanks to these kind words, submitted in an essay to the third annual Thank Your Vet for a Healthy Pet® contest, Weicht was chosen as the 2009 grand-prize National winner. The nationwide essay contest, conducted by Morris Animal Foundation, allows clients to honor outstanding veterinarians for their dedication to helping animals and strengthening the human-animal bond. A complete list of winners and nominees is posted at www.ThankYourVet.org.

Hundreds of pet owners throughout the country submitted nominations. The contest is co-sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Dog Fancy, Cat Fancy and Veterinary Practice News magazines, published by BowTie, Inc. Weicht is featured in the January issues of Dog Fancy and Cat Fancy and the February issue of Veterinary Practice News magazines.

Of the award, Weicht said, “I am rewarded every day just being able to serve as a veterinarian. When I am able to make a difference or impact a client, it is especially enjoyable. For someone to take the time to express this in writing is thoughtful, and I feel extremely honored.”

MAF attends the AKC-Eukanuba Dog Show

Monday, December 28th, 2009

MAF staff attended the AKC-Eukanuba National Championship. A special thanks to trustees Betty White and Cheryl Wagner for helping with various promotional events. This was a great show, and the MAF booth was busy with pet owners, media (including Animal Planet, which filmed a segment with Brewster, world’s tallest puppy) and celebrities. Rosebud and Budderball, from the movie Santa Buddies, drew a crowd. Disney has generously run an MAF ad in the DVD insert, and we look forward to expanding that partnership. Brewster-weighing in at 165 pounds at just 15 months-and his owner Sandy Hall were a big attraction. Sandy lost Brewster’s uncle, Gibson (the former world’s tallest dog), to cancer earlier this year and wants to help MAF promote the Canine Cancer Campaign. Betty accepted a $150,000 from Orvis and Eukanuba; this is money raised so far through the Orvis photo contest partnership. She also talked with Olympic champion Shawn Johnson at the MAF booth.

The walk benefited MAF’s Canine Cancer Campaign and to date has raised more than $15,500.

The day’s activities gave pet owners the opportunity to visit with various pet-related vendors, listen to three keynote speakers, including Dr. Robin Downing, MAF trustee and owner of Windsor Veterinary Clinic; Dr. Deanna Worley, a surgical oncologist from the Colorado State University’s Animal Cancer Center; and Dr. Patricia Olson, president/CEO of MAF. The Estes Park Jug Band provided entertainment.

Littleton Veterinary Clinic Honors Patients at Estes Park K9K

Littleton Veterinary Clinic Honors Patients at Estes Park K9K Walk to Cure Canine Cancer

Denver/Sept. 15, 2009 — National canine cancer statistics are startling—and for staff members at Colorado Veterinary Specialists, the fatal disease too often strikes close to home. Some are cancer survivors themselves, some have seen their pets struggle with the disease and all have given cancer diagnoses to pet owners too frequently.

That personal and professional experience prompted this veterinary hospital in Littleton to participate in the K9K Walk to Cure Canine Cancer in Estes Park on Sept. 19, 2009. The event benefits Denver-based Morris Animal Foundation’s (MAF) Canine Cancer Campaign, which funds research into cancer prevention and treatment.

“It is important for people to understand that we are dedicated to a cure,” says Beth Lewis, DVM, DACVS, whose basset hound Dash is undergoing treatment for lymphoma.

Elizabeth Hanssard, a customer service representative who organized the hospital’s K9K team, lost her Airedale terrier Elszie to osteosarcoma, an all too common and painful bone cancer. “As a cancer survivor myself, I would like to see treatments developed for our canine friends that have a higher success rate.”

The Estes Park K9K was organized by Patty Henderson, whose best friend lost her dog, Emily, to canine cancer. The event will feature three speakers, including Robin Downing, DVM, CVA, CCRP, DAAPM, owner of Windsor Veterinary Clinic and the Downing Center for Animal Pain Management; Deanne Worley, DVM, DACVS, a surgical oncologist at Colorado State University’s Animal Cancer Center; and Patricia Olson, DVM, PhD, MAF President/CEO.
